This past weekend I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Truth be told, it was more or less an excuse to hang out with some friends from earlier days (friends who I never want to lose touch with) and relive old memories while sharing in new ones. All in all, it was an amazing experience.
Aside from the amazing conversations, great food, copious amounts of walking around town and sharing life with some pretty amazing people, I was left in awe after attending Wil Wheaton’s panel that weekend.
If you’ve never been to a panel like this before, it’s simple: on the stage there is the star (or stars) of something (television show, movie, author, what have you…) and a moderator. The moderator starts off by asking questions of the celebrity guest, and then also takes questions from the audience. It’s a pretty simple (and effective) format.
Towards the end of the Q & A session, a young woman stood up and asked Wil if she could record him while telling her newborn daughter why it’s awesome to be a nerd. (She wanted to record him so she could show it to her daughter, Violet, when she would be old enough to understand).
Wil’s response was amazing. It left me with tears welling up in my eyes. It was a moment I will never forget. A moment that I will cherish for the rest of my life, knowing that I was there to experience it firsthand.
